Clubhouse is a voice-based social networking app. It hasn't exploded yet, but many early adopters are talking about it, simply because it's new in the social landscape, moreover cloaked in an aura of exclusivity. The application was created by Paul Davison and Rohan Set (Alpha Exploration Co.) and has only been available in the Apple App Store since April 2020. It had its first growth when it broadcast the musical The Lion King, then, gradually, thanks to an invitation-based registration mechanism (each user has the possibility of inviting two people and then an increasing number depending on their use of the platform), it has won over famous people and technology enthusiasts. We've been talking about it for a week because Andressen Horowitz, one of the most important venture capital funds, after an initial investment of 12 million, decided to add another 100, raising the company's valuation to one billion. Today it is thought to have gained 6 million monthly users (here are the statistics on other social media ).
In Italy, in the last week, it was the third most downloaded app and India Mobile Number Data the first among the social ones (data provided to me by Similarweb). My estimate is that Clubhouse has been installed by around 50,000 Italians [Update 12 February: 100,000 Italian Clubhouse users exceeded]; [Update 28 February: 330,000 Italian Clubhouse users exceeded]. How Clubhouse works Clubhouse is an asymmetric social network that allows you to communicate only using voice, in synchronous mode. As a result, all conversations occur in real time and are ephemeral. There are no reactions or comments, audio is the only interaction tool (to simulate applause the microphone is turned on and off alternately). After receiving the invitation, upon first entry, you are asked to choose a name and upload a photo (the instruction is to use real information and not nicknames, therefore no company profiles are foreseen).
As in asymmetric social networks, you will have to build your own network of contacts, identifying the most interesting people to follow (this is why the app asks for access to the address book). Finally you can select your interests. The choice of contacts and topics is essential to guide the algorithm which has the task of suggesting the most interesting rooms. At this point the homepage is ready. It has a bar at the top with a series of icons that allow you to search for new contacts, send invitations, access the events calendar, notifications and your profile. The feed is like a corridor, made up of future and ongoing events, called rooms. Rooms and Clubs The user has two options: enter a room or create one.
